The Legacy of Longfellow

The longer we occupy Longfellow Center, the more we become aware of its rich history to the neighborhood and the city. We would like to include your anecdotes, photos, and reminiscences in future newsletters. Did you attend Longfellow Elementary or know someone who did? Do you know something unique about the building? Do you know the silly jingle that starts with "You're a poet and you didn't know it"? Send us your photos and stories!

Standing Guard

On November 12, 1931, the Argus Leader ran this photograph. It was newsworthy because this group of young men were the state's very first school patrol and they were students at Longfellow Elementary. Those pictured were Asher Pay, Dale Corcoran, Reginald Davis, Frank Weatherwax, Raymond Swift, Pershing Melquist, Clifford Berg, Robert Roth, Gilbert Johnson, Danforth Fleisher, Ross Greer, Geoffrey Hall, and Robert Lubker. The principal was Grace Haas.  (Photo shared by William Pay)
